Do you have a tendency to answer before fully listening, interrupt finishing someone else’s thought, or get impatient while listening once you have developed an answer? My mouth has gotten me into so much trouble simply because I didn’t pause to think before I started to speak. The Psalms are filled with pauses called Selah’s. Selah is a Hebrew word that means to pause before proceeding. I wonder what the world would sound like if all of us chose to pause before proceeding to speak. Can you think of a person you can use the Selah technique with? Imagine the wisdom the Holy Spirit would introduce if He had the space to inspire during your pause? James addresses this challenge by encouraging everyone to be slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19). Consider if, when mad, you paused and became slow to speak. How many arguments would lose momentum if the Holy Spirit had space to intervene before you responded in anger? Selah – pause before proceeding.
